»How does it feel to be trapped in a book?«

 The Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel and the Curt Mast Jägermeister Foundation honor the artist and author Beldan Sezen (New York/Amsterdam) with the Artist Book Prize 2022.

Beldan Sezen will deal with voluntary and involuntary isolation. Their project outline states: “Confined spaces can be voluntary and are often involuntary. Imprisonment and isolation as a form of punishment. Isolation as a form of retreat – either as a space for refection and learning or as a space in which one should live as the “other” among many.” As an example an examination of Anton Wilhelm Amo, who at the beginning of the 18th century came to the court of the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel as a child and is considered the first European philosopher of African descent. For the implementation, the artist is planning a walk-in book based on her concept of “solitary confinement” – the transformation of a flat book into a cubic space.

»Wie fühlt es sich an, in einem Buch gefangen zu sein?«

Die Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel und die Curt Mast Jägermeister Stiftung zeichnen die Künstlerin und Autorin Beldan Sezen (New York/ Amsterdam) mit dem Künstlerbuchpreis 2022 aus.

Beldan Sezen wird sich mit freiwilliger und unfrei- williger Isolation auseinandersetzen. In ihrer Projektskizze heißt es: »Räumliche Beschränkungen können freiwillig sein und sind oft unfreiwillig. Gefangenschaft und Isolation als Form der Bestrafung. Isolation als eine Form des Rückzugs

– entweder als Raum zum Nachdenken und Lernen oder als Raum, in dem einer als der »Andere« unter vielen leben soll.« Als Beispiel dient eine Auseinandersetzung mit Anton Wilhelm Amo, der zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts im Kindesalter an den Hof der Herzöge von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel kam und als erster europäischer Philosoph afrikanischer Herkunft gilt. Für die Umsetzung plant die Künstlerin ein begehbares Buch nach ihrem Konzept des Solitary Confinement – der Verwandlung eines flachen Buches in einen kubischen Raum.
