Butch It Up
I've been awarded with a Global Arts Fund Award by the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice for realising an art project on queer women images in Istanbul, Turkey.
Butch It Up is a guerrilla art project that draws attention to the violent marking of LGBTI bodies as targets of "public morality” in Turkey in both the political and social arenas.
The criminalization of LGBTI people in Turkey doesn't happen through law enforcement but though powerful social regulation and pervasive censorship, forcefully applying traditional gender roles on children; forcing gay men to prove their homosexuality to military psychiatrists; forcing transgender women into prostitution as often the only means to earn a living; and forcing lesbians into arranged marriages.
By creating non-stereotypical images of women's bodies that will challenge mainstream attitudes, I aim to: break stigma through visibility; break taboos through questioning gender roles; break invisibility through appearing in public spaces; and break isolation through engaging in dialogue.

Butch It Up gerilla sanat projesi Türkiye'de LGBTI bedenlerine "genel ahlak" hem siyasi hem de sosyal alanlarda şiddeti işaretlemesine dikkat çekmeyi hedefliyor.
Türkiye'de LGBTI bireylerin mağdur durumda bırakılması emniyet güçleri tarafından değil ama güçlü toplumsal düzenleme ve yaygın sansür aracılıyla, zorla çocuklarla ilgili geleneksel cinsiyet rollerini uygulayarak, askeri psikiyatristlere kendi eşcinselliğini ispatlamak zorunda kalan eşcinsel erkeklerle, geçimini sağlamak için tek seçeneği seks isçisi olarak çalışmak zorunda kalan trans kadınlarla, ve düzenlenmiş evliliklere zorlanan lezbiyenler ile gerçekleştiriliyor.
Kadın bedeni stereotipilerinden uzak, yaygın değerlere karşıt görseller yaratmak ile hedefim: görünmeyeni görünür yaparak stigmayı kırmak, cinsiyet rollerini sorgulayarak tabuları yıkmak, kamusal alanlarda görünerek görünmezliği kırmak, ve diyalog alanları yaratarak tecriti kırmak.
